National Library Week

Straight from my email inbox this morning, the April 16th edition of American Library Direct complete with the following video. National Library Week: College Reference Desk "shot at Morton College Library in Cicero, Illinois, and starring Shad Kunkle."

"I need to get some information on the health effects of eating romin noodles for seventeen days."

"Do you know how much jail time a guy would have to do if he beat up a mascot?"

The best part? I'll go out on a limb here and venture a guess that he did not have to make up the questions.

Happy National Library Week!

2007 Blogging Scholarship

Straight from my email inbox, the Actions and Answers section of the lastest issue of American Libraries Direct:

Library Student is finalist for $10,000 blogging scholarship

"Karin Dalziel, an LIS student at the University of Missouri–Columbia, is one of 20 finalists for College Scholarship.org’s 2nd annual
blogging scholarship, which features an award of $10,000 to help pay for books and tuition. Dalziel was selected from hundreds of applicants and is the only library blogger in the group." (ALDirect, 10/17/07)

I have read Karin's blog, already placed my vote, and would encourage people to take a look at the finalists for this interesting award. (And yes, seriously consider voting for Karin.)
And, to answer the question posed in the header of Karin's recent blog posting, Am I the only one that likes library school? ... nah, I really enjoyed my experience at Pitt.

New from AL Focus

Two new conference video links arrived in my AL Direct email this morning. Since instructions to embed the videos on a blog, "Copy and paste this code (make sure you get all of it) into your blog to embed it," are provided I'll post both of them here. Word of warning, I have had little luck viewing either of these in real time this morning. Even with Flash 9 downloaded there was a significant wait time while the videos loaded from Blip TV.

And yes, ALA is aware of this because they already have video help posted on the page.

Either way, there is a lot of traffic signifying a great deal of interest in these videos and/or our network connection is slow; regardless it is requiring more patience and time to view than I have available this morning. I will stop back later.

I removed the embedded shows late Friday afternoon; the slow connections with BlipTV were dragging down general load times for other page elements in the blog, including sidebar widgets and photographs. Links to these videos still work and will take you directly to AL Focus for viewing.

ALA Direct: Seen Online

One last post on the Newbery Award winner, its subsequent controversy, and the ensuing discussions .... Today's American Libraries Direct (3/21/07) has a link in Seen Online to Carol Lay's comic strip, Waylay, featured in Salon. It begins:

"I ruffled some feathers recently by riffing on a New York Times article about an award-winning children's book. A few librarians had objected to the use of the word 'scrotum' and had promised to boycott the book." (A-mends, 3/21/07)

Here's the link: Carol Lay, A-Mends. It is possible to click past the registration and view the cartoon without much issue.

The end made me smile.
