Novel Ties: Classics and Comics in the Classroom

Monday, April 20, 2015
The Ohio State University
Thompson Library, Room 150
1858 Neil Avenue Mall, Columbus OH 43210

With so much focus on technology these days, we’re going back to the books to look at how literature can be used in the classroom in innovative ways. We’ll examine the more “traditional” novel and get the inside story from a 2015 Newbery Committee member. We’ll also look at the graphic novel and how its popularity with students can be leveraged in the classroom to enhance reading instruction and to provide new opportunities to engage with text. In addition, we’ll take some time for small group discussions on topics of interest to CMC librarians. The day will conclude with a brief tour of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum.

Pinterest: 2014 CMCIG Spring Workshop

The ALAO CMCIG Spring Workshop is scheduled for Friday, April 4th. I'm excited to have been asked to participate in one of the scheduled sessions: Marketing CMC’s and Library Resources Using Pinterest. During the session I plan to discuss a variety of board types currently featured on the IRC Pinterest site that may be developed, such as:

Pinterest is easily personalized, curriculum materials centers - and libraries - are able to quickly create content specific to the intended audience. What works for my IRC Pinterest site, may not be suited for another library.  Of particular interest is the availability of widgets allowing me to incorporate Pinterest boards into existing resources such as web sites, blogs, twitter, and LibGuides.

Pinterest's recent inclusion of animated gifs to their pinnable resources has helped to move the site beyond simple images and video. I have not yet created an gifs, but continue to explore ways to develop video resources such as Animoto and recently the app Tellagami.

I am really looking forward to learning about what other CMCs are doing with Pinterest.

CMCIG 2010: Visiting Mazza Museum

Lunch, a tasty salad and soup buffet, and the final workshop session took place at the Mazza Museum International Art From Picture Books, The University of Findlay. Mazza docents provided information facts about the museum (see below) and treated us to small group tours of the five museum galleries, each with unique picture book art and artists displayed.
Quick Facts @ http://www.mazzamuseum.org
  • Is supported by a volunteer group known as the "Mazza Enthusiasts"
  • Is served by Docents specially trained to lead tours through the museum.
  • Has a mailing list of over 2,000 interested persons living in over 45 states and 8 countries
  • Annually provides formal tours through the galleria for over 5,000 children and adults.
  • Provides a "Discovery Series" to highlight new talent in the field of illustrating books for children.
  • Has conducted 14 Mazza Study Tours visiting over 210 of our artists in their homes and studios.
We were privileged to meet the new Deputy Director of the museum who gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the gallery vault and detailed the many steps involved in taking proper care of the art entrusted to their gallery. It was amazing to learn how the art is prepared for display and protected from the elements (including state-of-the-art fire protection). Museum calendars in hand, we finished our tour in the gift shop.

Many thanks to CMCIG co-chair Kathy Yoder, Gaynelle Predmore, and the entire CMC staff at BGSU's Jerome Library for another great CMCIG workshop.

CMCIG 2010: Show & Tell Roundtable

Informal and fun, the show & tell session was a definite workshop highlight; each attendee was asked to bring three favorite or new things for sharing. With our technical services area full of wonderful new toys and resources, it was tempting to search and select something not yet cataloged. Good sense prevailed and I selected two of the new picture books recently added to the juvenile collection; Palazzo Inverso and Chalk (both exceptionally well done, I have them set aside for the fall Mock Caldecott session).

CMC items were varied and included children's literature, regular collection, activity books, materials kits, and DVD. As we moved around the tables, notes were taken and the complete list shared at the end of the day. Links from this post go to Amazon for additional information.

CMCIG 2010: Ohio Resource Center

Yesterday was the Curriculum Materials Center Interest Group, or CMCIG, annual spring workshop. Held at Bowling Green University's Jerome Library Curriculum Materials Center and hosted by CMCIG co-chair Kathy Yoder, workshop attendees came from Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania to discuss "What Works" in their curriculum material centers. Three separate sessions were planned for the workshop; a demonstration of the Ohio Resource Center; a new resource round table, a session of resource sharing which bookended a tour of BGSU's curriculum resource center, and a docent led tour of Mazza Museum.

Ohio Resource Center Ambassador Debbie Reynolds, Library Media Coordinator for Findlay City Schools, provided an overview of the ORC web site. What is the ORC?

"The ORC provides links to peer-reviewed instructional resources that have been identified by a panel of Ohio educators as exemplifying best or promising practice. Available resources also include content and professional resources as well as assessment and general education resources that will support the work of pre K–12 classroom teachers and higher education faculty members. The resources are correlated with Ohio's academic content standards and with applicable national content standards."

Debbie guided us through the web site and we had time to sign up for a free account, a great opportunity since options to create collections and receive newsletters is part of the service. At this time, the Ohio Resource Center focuses primarily upon mathematics, science, and language arts. Each curriculum area has an overview with features and quick links, and provides menu options for topics, grade level, and desired resources. It's possible to keep up with the ORC via Facebook, Twitter for math, science, English language arts, and early childhood, and their YouTube Channel.

This is a wonderful resource for preservice teachers served by curriculum materials centers, or in my case instructional resource centers, as well as new and established teachers. I hope to investigate this more closely as the links and videos it provides will be a great addition to existing education LibGuides.

CMCIG Workshop: Ready to go

I know, the business card looks suspiciously familiar. This is not another post about an AU LibGuides presentation, though in a way it could be. Finishing touches on Friday's CMCIG Spring Workshop presentation Realigning Teacher Education were made yesterday. As with the ACRL poster session, some kind of token handout with our presentation URL and contact information is necessary. I have IRC pens for each attendee, so creating a card and attaching it to the pen seemed a quick and easy solution.

Why does it look like a LibGuide? After Deanna mentioned her strong aversion to PowerPoint, the presentation tool we selected was ... LibGuides. As co-editors we were able to work independently and collaboratively, thus using a web 2.0 tool, to discuss web 2.0 technologies. The presentation is a timely addition to our growing LibGuides arsenal and includes education, library, and technology resources for interested patrons.

For the first time I incorporated an RSS feed into a LibGuide, though I am a bit frustrated by only being able to use one proxy address. I wanted to create an Ebsco database alert about RSS feeds to demonstrate how users can keep track of desired search strategies and to present articles about using RSS feeds in education. The feed was easy to create and adding the AU proxy for off-campus database access took only a click of the mouse; not being able to use an OhioLINK proxy (allowing OhioLINK members to view the feed) was problematic. I had to settle for advising attendees the alerts would not work off-campus for non-AU users. All of the additional resources will be accessible with OhioLINK authentication.

I'm always learning something new when creating a LibGuide, this time was no different. I discovered you can manipulate the size of a tab. Our presentation includes twelve tabs displayed in two rows. To make the tabs fit on the page, I added html coding for a space (nbsp;) behind different titles and was able to finagle how they displayed. Since we have had luck adding that same code into a box title, it was worth trying.

As to the presentation guide, Deanna mentioned we have over three hours of information to present during a forty-five minute session. We are meeting via yahoo IM later this week to finalize - and tweak - the guide and plan.

Teaching and playing to learn

Over the last few days I have been collaborating with Dr. Deanna Romano, Ashland University Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Dwight Schar College of Education, on a presentation scheduled for next Friday, the 2009 CMCIG workshop. Our presentation, a work in progress titled Realigning Teacher Education Using Web 2.0 Technologies to Meet 21st Century Skills, will focus extensively on technologies currently being taught in EDCI 232/505 Introduction to the Principles of Instructional Technology.

I have had opportunity teach this course as an adjunct for the COE and appreciate each week brings a different technology to the forefront that may be used in the classroom. I get to refresh and polish my technology skills and theorize the same for the Instructional Resource Center. Concepts we are practicing, and in some cases introducing, to pre-service teachers may often be applied to libraries; students of all ages expect us to be if not proficient, at least have a rudimentary knowledge, of 2.0 technologies they are using at a blazing speed.

And, to be honest, it gives me the chance to play to learn. My tools of choice this week were Windows Movie Maker and YouTube. I spent time working with my new toy, a shiny new HP laptop, pulling together free, accessible resources to create a short library video. With the exception of wanting to "tweak" the sound at the beginning of the presentation, it is difficult to hear, I am pleased with the end result.
